Thesis abstract

This research project aims to explore how the energy transition will impact Italy’s electricity system by 2050. I plan to develop innovative optimization models using long-term capacity expansion methods. The focus will be on integrating electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy into the power system, using an open-source energy system modelling tool to build a detailed, multi-nodal model with high time resolution. The study will include different types of transport, such as passenger cars, buses, and light- and heavy-duty vehicles, to explore how transport can be decarbonized. Through simulations and analysis, I will examine how these changes affect the electricity system and what infrastructure is needed. I will also look at the economic impact of smart charging and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies, especially in relation to battery degradation and how it affects users. This comprehensive approach will help improve understanding of how to integrate EVs effectively into energy networks and support Italy’s shift toward a cleaner, more sustainable transport system.

Personal interest in my research theme

Climate change is a serious issue, and I believe global warming is largely driven by greenhouse gas emissions. The electricity and transport sectors are two of the biggest contributors. I see the electrification of transport, especially through electric vehicles (EVs), as a key solution to reduce emissions and help reach climate goals. However, I also realize that a large shift to EVs isn’t simple. It will lead to a big increase in electricity demand and could put pressure on the power grid. These changes bring new challenges that need to be addressed by considering dumb charging, smart charging, and V2G, in order to better understand the impact and develop clear strategies for integrating EVs into our energy systems effectively.
