Thesis abstract

My PhD research focuses on the adoption of innovative CO2 based mixtures as working fluid for closed power cycles.
CO2 mixtures can turn the supercritical CO2 cycle into a transcritical one, decreasing the compression power and increasing the cycle efficiency.
The most important application of the innovative power cycles are to concentrated solar power, a field that already could benefit from the transition from the traditional steam cycles to sCO2, and even more with transcritical CO2-mixtures cycles.

Personal interest in my research theme

The most attractive part of my research is to detail the power plants with numerical methods that requires both the estimation of the thermodyamic and transport properties of unknown working fluids, such as mixtures, and also the physical design of the components including geometries, costs, preformances and their off design behaviour.
The application of the novel concepts to renewable energy systems (such as CSP) or waste heat systems (to incrase the energy efficiency of existing industrial plants) sharply increase the appeal of the research topic.
