Thesis abstract

Given the ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set by the European Union and the importance of cities in achieving these goals, there is an increasing need to analyze their environmental footprint with a life cycle approach. The life cycle assessment is considered the leading methodology for environmental metrics. In this context, my Ph.D. research focuses on developing a new tool that allows an extensive environmental evaluation of buildings, where other devices lack, making urban scale data management and environmental assessment complicated or impractical. Based on the functionalities of the tool developed, I am trying to provide scenarios for the decarbonization of the city of Milan.

Personal interest in my research theme

I very much appreciated the opportunity I received to do my Ph.D. During these years, I had the chance to attend exciting study courses both at the Politecnico di Milano and at foreign organizations (Aalborg University and International Life Cycle Academy). In addition, I improved my skills in computer programming, statistical data analysis, and modeling the potential impacts generated by buildings through the process-based Life Cycle Assessment method. I think the experience I had significantly contributed to my professional growth.
